We all have a great responsibility!

2 SAMUEL 10:2”Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent some of his servants to console him concerning his father. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites”

My teaching is based on the above scripture which is very crucial, sometimes difficulties are compounded in our life because of that ‘one unwise decision’ that we had taken, anybody listening? All of us have personal kinks to work out, and we all make mistakes, who does not err, you may ask; however, some mistakes have serious repercussions which cannot be undone. This is not serious Bible study; however, we all have precious lessons though, to learn through this chapter, let us see.

Chapter 9 opens like this:  2 Samuel 9:1”Then David said, “Is there yet anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”  The magnanimity and kind heart of David in showing love to Mephibosheth, the grandson of his enemy Saul is mind-boggling, David said, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly.”  Observe this: ‘at my table regularly’, feeding the enemy from far is one thing but making him sit at his own table all the days of his life and completely transforming his status is something incredible, such is the kind heart of David.  We must always remember, we are not reading history or geography but the Word of God, so it is bound to dig deep into the crevices of our heart to find if we have any bitterness in our heart towards people who have wronged us.  I shared this word with my family during our early morning prayer and also allowed the Holy Spirit to cleanse us from all hurts and pain, check out yours too!

As we bask in this ‘kindness’ and stroll into the next chapter, here we read about David showing kindness to his enemy the Ammonite, now wait a minute, did not Jesus tell us to love our enemy and also pray for our persecutors? Yes, He did, but Jesus never told us to be unwise, in fact, Jesus said: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”(Mathew 10:16)  Anybody listening?

David sent a friendly embassy to Hanun king of the Ammonites, He showed kindness to me, says David (v. 2), so David wanted to reciprocate, having enjoyed satisfaction from showing love to the family of Saul, David was doing a repetition. Danger! Caveat!  We need discretion for every decision that we take, we cannot do a repetition just because we felt good about it the previous time, anybody listening?  Let me show you who this Nahash is, he was a cruel enemy of Israel who said, 1 Samuel 11: 2  “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.” Look what happened because of this mistake, the servants who obeyed David by entering into the enemy territory were humiliated, “shaved off half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away.”  It may sound a ‘simple act of kindness’ but look at the serious impact it has created, there was also a battle because of this.  We could have avoided many of the troubles in our life,  if only we had acted cautiously and not presumptuously!

  1. Crown comes with responsibility!

Now let us draw personal applications in our life through the above Bible portion. The splendor of a king is just not in his crown alone, that crown comes with responsibility!  Anybody listening?  Whatever may be the leadership role that you are holding today, even if it is the head of a family as a father – everything has great responsibility on your shoulder. Are you hearing me?

While pilots are rarely seen by the passengers, every passenger appreciates a pilot who handles and manages the plane well.  The pilot, also called “Captain”, is responsible for everything that occurs on the ground, during the flight, and until it is safely parked again.  A pilot’s initial responsibility is to check the weather throughout the flight path and confirm flight schedules. Pilots are also responsible for running a comprehensive preflight checklist of all systems, including fuel, engines, hydraulics and electronics.  Even before the flight begins, Pilots typically report to work an hour before departure in order to meet with flight crew and review weather and airport conditions. The captain then goes through a series of safety checklists of switches and instruments in the cockpit with the first officer (co-pilot). Every instrument is checked and double-checked. In addition, the captain communicates with the air traffic controller and the ground crew in preparation for takeoff. Observe this: During takeoff, landing, and during the flight, the pilots continue to communicate with one another as well as with the air traffic controllers, his eyes, ears and entire concentration has to be on his job.

Likewise, all leadership roles, whether pastor or father, mother, teacher, preacher, builders, constructors, WHATEVER……we are responsible for the safe landing, do not take your roles lightly.  GOD BLESS YOU!

New strength

1541778428576Pure gold

Isaiah 41:1”….let the peoples gain new strength..”

There’s a craze for something ‘new’ today, have you watched food cooked in open air near the stream have million views, swanky, clean kitchen and hitech kitchen tools and utensils are passé! This is crazy, we already have iPhone 8,  cars, refrigerators, washing machines are all getting upgraded with new forms! Phew! Great!  While I worked for a multinational bank about two decades back, plastic cards ( credit cards) were a craze and status symbol but today it is norm and a ‘demonic symbol’ (consuming people through debts). Well, today I am going to talk about ‘new strength’, which helps you when all of  the above fall, fail, vanish and perish!  Give God a mighty hand of praise!  After two decades of resigning my job and entering the vineyard of the Lord as full time servant with nothing but ‘faith’ in my hand, I still stand tall and strong!  All glory to Jesus!

Awe moment!  This morning during our family early morning prayer,  my husband asked my daughter, ‘why do you like your mom so much?’ She immediately replied, ‘because she is so strong and also teaches me to be strong.’ Awwww! This conversation I would cherish in my heart as long as I live, though many people get strengthened through me but being a blessing for your own family is something beautiful.  Though I am very weak physically with some pain or the other somewhere, a person who is emotional as well; yet, this appreciation is ‘pure gold’ for me.  Well, I receive this spiritual strength at His feet!  Anybody listening?  Besides my school duties as a principal, my writing, cooking, preaching, children hostel work, supervision of teachers and other workers, I was able to completely read my Bible twice this year and I am seriously targeting for the third time before this December.  It is midnight 1.30 am, as I type this on my laptop, I am spending the entire night in prayer today, I get my strength here as I sit and read His Word and pray, nothing shakes me though, because I know His love for me is steadfast.

It’s not about how many cars, houses, properties you have, all that is nothing…compared to how much of new faith, more love and more holiness you have gained.  Do you have the strength to stop drinking, smoking, cussing, blaming, murmuring, grumbling, sleeping too much, eating greedily and spending recklessly?  Tell me.  This requires NEW STRENGTH! Come close to Jesus today!

Why has the LORD defeated us?

No mango Jelly this…..

1 Samuel 4:3”the elders of Israel said, “Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines?”

Now, I gave a funky title so that you guys open and read it out of curiosity! Period.  This is a serious topic but let me open with a comedy though, this happened a few years back, I went to visit a very close family of ours; however, the lady of that house had to go out on an important work, so I pitched in to cook for the family that day.  She had actually cooked the dhal so I entered the kitchen to make the traditional south Indian ‘sambar’.  My sambar receives raving reports so I very proudly went about making it with super confidence, at the end, the color of the sambar was different, it did not have that goldish look.  The family ate it quietly – no comments though, I left confused.  For a long time, I wondered why didn’t that family give me ‘sabash’ report?  Finally when I was casually talking to that woman one day, she said, ‘I boiled only plain dhal, I did not add anything else’ – I got a shock.  Ah! So, I had actually made the sambar that day without tomatoes! Now everything became clear, I presumed that the dhal was cooked with tomatoes and garlic which I normally do, no wonder the sambar tasted weird!  I pitied the family who quietly ate the sambar mixed rice.

Coming back to our anchor scripture that we are meditating, the elders of Israel wondered “Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines?”, but the truth of the matter is they were responsible for the chaotic situation of Israel!  My conundrum is: why did they not get it, get it, get it……..? The House of God was neglected, Bible was ignored, adultery happened inside the church, offerings were being looted, Leader was casually napping – so can the leaders now deny their lackadaisical role in the deterioration and devastation of the church? NEVER.  Squarely every leader was/is responsible and accountable to God!

  • Why did I lose my job, where is God ask many Christians, my question is, did you tithe, did you read the Word, did you pray….. ?
  • Why did my marriage fail, why did God allow it? ask some Christians, my question is, did you have family prayer?
  • My child is on drugs and alcohol, why did this happen ask Christian parents, my question is, did you teach him the Bible, send him to Sunday class and were you role model for him?

When things go wrong instead of blaming God, why not turn the focus on us and search our hearts for iniquities?

If the date of salvation is already fixed by God, then why should I pray hard?

If the date of salvation is already fixed by God, then why should I pray hard?

Genesis 18:32 Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.”

I write this on a day of fasting and prayer, because the fire of God’s anointing is needed to percolate into the hearts of the people and bring understanding.  Stay tuned to His voice now.  The deception of the devil is to keep you away from God but my desire is to see you and your family saved. Amen.  It has taken me  more than 3 to 4 hours to write this devotion, after intense Bible study, which you would be reading in five minutes; however, I am determined in my commitment to expound the Gospel.

Someone told me, ‘Bala, we got to patiently wait, because only in God’s time the person will be saved.” Ah! I felt this got to be explained otherwise the devil is going to keep people lethargic and irresponsible in this very important subject of salvation. Salvation isn’t  magic, we got to be patient I agree, but not lazy in praying, so much so, when you slow down your intensity in praying, the devil grabs the person through calamities.   Suicides, heart attacks and accidents can overtake, if you are not intense in your prayer, do not take God for granted.  The devil twists the words of God and thereby today we have umpteen false doctrines; however, if you are a humble person reading the Word of God with a pure mind, God would surely reveal the truth to you.  I would give few incidents from the Bible and explain this to you:

pray hard

In Genesis 18, we see Abraham boldly stand in front of God and plead on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah, he prayed, ‘will you save the cities for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?’ and then slowly brings the number down to 10, God agrees to his request. This is the power of intercession prayer, but alas, not even 10 righteous are found in Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities were destroyed.  When you pray God listens!  The idea, ‘God is anyway going to save the person only in His time’, takes the onus away from intense praying, wrestling in prayer for the unsaved person, intense fasting and also thereby takes away the guilt of prayerlessness.  Spiritual lethargy finds excuses to take the tough route!  (Make a note of this statement and keep it in your bedroom, so that you wake up at 5 am in the morning and pray for your loved ones without fishing for excuses.) Be warned today, when you don’t pray enough and make changes in your life too then some souls will not be saved and deliverances may not take place. PRAYER, PRAYER…PRAYER  is the answer…..

Numbers 16 in the Bible gives us an account of God’s wrath and how ‘ONLY’ prayer can change a situation.  Even after the bunch of Korah group were swallowed in earth quake, even after they witnessed first-hand the results of rebellion; yet, the Israelites murmured, verse 41 ‘But on the next day all the congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron….” OMG! Can people be so hardhearted and brash to talk against the servants of God after witnessing such catastrophes?  When they did that, God commanded Moses and Aaron to get away so that He could kill them, but Moses tells Aaron, “Take your censer and put in it fire from the altar, and lay incense on it; then bring it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone forth from the LORD, the plague has begun!”  This part is crucial, hear me:

Numbers 16:47”Aaon ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had (already)begun among the people…” (so, any slowing down on your part is going to affect the sinners..)  Listen to this, the plague stopped after Aaron prayed; nonetheless, 14,700 had already died.  I remember an incident, I preached exactly the same message with passion and tears rolling down my cheek in one of our FIRE CAMPS; at the end of the message, we received a call from the family of one of the participants saying, ‘her father committed suicide by consuming poison.’ Pray fervently for the lost ones, don’t delay !

Yes, only after Hannah got up from her seat of complacency and prayed intensely and forcefully, was she able to conceive Samuel.  Are you hearing me?  Flippant, nonchalant, powerless prayer achieves nothing, remember when your situation is grim and serious, you got to pray more and press more. Can I remind you of the prayer of Jesus at Gethsemane, “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”(Luke 22:44)

WORD OF GODbible reading.jpg

There is power in the Word of God, so they got to hear the Gospel, I remember leaving my children with my husband to take them to church, while I waited in my friend’s place to take her entire family to church, the travel to the church was not pleasant though, everything possible happened to stop us, there were hassles in parking the car also, we made it anyway.    Many miracles happened in that family after that, someone has to make a sacrifice and take an effort.  It’s the Word of God that brings faith for salvation: “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17)  “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed,,” Rom 10:14

James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”  So, we understand that there are rewards when we walk righteously, despite the loss and sufferings that goes with it.  God hears their prayer!  We cannot remain dishonest, unreliable and wicked and expect our prayers for the salvation of our loved ones to be heard, is anyone understanding please?  You can get saved but still gossip, get angry, fight, smoke, drink, be vengeful, merciless, create confusion,  slow to forgive and much more; so be fruitful for effective answers for prayers.

Why not be wronged?

Why not be cheated?suffer wrong

1 Corinthians 6:7”…….Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?

Observe Paul’s tone, he is annoyed and angry at believers running around to people to solve their problems.  Each time I get to this scripture, I have never stopped feeling nonplussed and startled at the high expectations of God from us!  In my experience, I have watched Bible-reading, born-again, big-talk Christian families run to the police station, courts and relatives to solve silly family disputes.  They trust police stations and courts more than church and the leadership of the church, anybody listening?  Sadly, most of the them are highly educated people too,  but do not have Bible  knowledge though, which is exactly the reason why they run the opposite direction and blasphemy the name of the Lord.  Police stations and courts are not wrong places; however, what the Bible emphasizes is that solve them yourself or endure, rather than run around for silly matters.

Someone has taken your parking space, damaged your car inadvertently, the neighbor and his ten dogs disturb you miserably, arrogantly someone parks his car right in front of your gate, noise, dirt, disturbance, property disputes and million other things irritate us every day, but the Bible tells us to suffer wrong and not make a great scene when cheated.  Anybody listening?  Is it possible to remain silent when you are affected?  I guess, none of us can do this on our own, but we can do this through Jesus Christ who gives us the strength.  When Abide School moved into the new rented building (we stay now), initially the unruly boys of that locality started throwing stones inside our school, the teachers and the children got very scared, we spoke to the parents and also rebuked the boys but the problems got worse than stop, now along with my husband, I started praying for the neighbors and good relationship between us every day, we went around the school daily and  prayed.  After about a year, (note, it didn’t happen immediately) the family that stayed opposite our school and created the most racket, approached me two weeks back and donated rice and dhal for the students.  Glory to Jesus! Jesus can reverse the situation when you pray, do you hear me?

Let me tell you something, surrounded by idol worship and secular people who have no clue about our God and the Bible, are looking at us and our life!  Caution!  Your kindness, gentleness, compassion, long-suffering and patience should impact them and bring them to Christ!

Sit with Goddeer

Habakkuk 3:19”The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.”

My experience:

Can a scripture keep you so enthralled that you could think of nothing else?  Yeah, get to the end of this article then you would comprehend the power behind God’s Word.  Well, God sent this scripture to me almost like a ‘wrapped up gift’, at a time when things were unimaginably tough and knotty, as a family we were praying for God to intervene and bring us a breakthrough, during this time, I read this scripture: ‘He would make my feet like hinds’ feet and I would walk on high places!’

The words that captivated me much were the ‘high place!’  Normally we would get lot of ‘Amens’ for this promise because people attribute high places to materialistic blessings like car, promotion, foreign assignment, new job etc; however, walking in high places means that you would walk with God in the place where He dwells. This thought gives me goosebumps‘ , how about you? If you’re not excited about being with God, then the rest of the portion would bore you stiff; nevertheless, if you are the one who would love to get deeper with God then you proceed.  You may wonder, ‘why is Bala getting so crazy about this verse, it doesn’t promise any goodies though?’  Well, if you know my journey then you would understand the reason behind my joy.

On one single day I had to deal with students bashing each other, three girls of the same family who joined Angel Home were creating problems because the father wanted the children back, besides this, administration, financial and various other problems choked me. I came home tensed, did not utter a word but inside I was pleading the Lord, ‘this is too much Lord.’  My feet were shaking and I felt……….wobbly…shabby…..unsteady………

It is now that I read ‘I will strengthen you and make your feet like a deer and make you walk in high places.’   The word ‘high’ means elevation or height in Hebrew and above the sky or heavenly in Greek, therefore, the ‘high place’ means the heavenly realm.  Deer is able to scale treacherous tough terrains and elude predators. Deer’s legs are even able to jump on hard and sharp rocks to get to the top of the hill, a place where the deer will be in a much safer situation.  Likewise, God strengthens us to flee from demons, problems, sickness, loneliness, strife, envy, betrayals, mockery, criticisms and get to the high place with God, where you feel secure.

You know what, at a time when the nation was in a bad shape, Habakkuk was able to say: 17 Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, ….Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.”   You can make such statements only when you sit in the high place, anybody listening?  Someone asked me – very close to me – ‘from where do you think you would get the money to purchase the school building?’  I said, ‘from above’, they said, ‘stop being arrogant.’  What?  This is what you would be labeled when you answer from the ‘HIGH PLACE!’  Hurray!  Not many can stay here, because you got to battle with demons.

When you reach this HIGH PLACE,  your struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Did you read this? So put on the full armour of God if you desire to come to the high place, you cannot browse facebook and whatsup for 24 hours and come here.

In order to get to this high place, we got to leave the earthly stuff, the best scripture I could think of is from James chapter 3:

14   But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

15   This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

16   For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

17   But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Did you get that?

Stop even talking to people who are namby-pamby,  who have the smell of gossip, bad mouth and evil thoughts, this would rub off on you and spoil your vision.  Stay connected with God.  I am battling with demons as I write this portion.  But let me tell you the lovely things that happen when you close your door and spend quiet time with God, the sky opened for Peter when he went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. (Acts 10:10)  Are you content with a fleeting five-minutes prayer or would you like to climb up to the high place and live a heavenly life?
